How to navigate collaborative course editing

If multiple users edit the same course content simultaneously, it can lead to data conflicts and make it difficult to maintain consistent and up-to-date information. For this reason, course editing in the builder is limited to one user.

In this article, we will overview the specifics of collaborative course editing.

Instructors’ workflows

Multiple instructors can manage their course simultaneously, but only one can make changes using the builder.

Instructors can answer students' questions, accept and comment on assignments, and view course content at the same time.

Account owners can add instructors and manage their access through the Team tab in account settings or invite them through the online course builder.

Instructors’ collaborative editing

One instructor can edit course content on one device. They can open the builder in several tabs but make edits only in one of them.

If an instructor is using the builder, no one else will be able to delete lessons, tests, or sections until they exit it.

To go to the builder, open your course, click the three dots next to a lesson or section, and select Edit.

If you open the builder while another instructor is using it, you will receive a message showing who it is. You can also hover over the lock icon in the upper right corner to view their name.

To save your changes, wait until the other instructor exits the builder. You can check this by refreshing the page. If you no longer see the previous notification and the lock icon in the top panel, you can proceed with your edits.

Saving changes and exiting

To allow other instructors to edit the course, save your changes, and exit the builder by clicking Save and exit.

You can also exit the builder by clicking the close icon, but then your changes will not be saved.
